‘Til No One is Hungry Capital Campaign
Capital Campaign Overview The food bank now ranks at the top of other major metropolitan food banks, distributing 20 million pounds of food annually. However, for the past 8 years, even as demand has continued to climb, our food distribution has plateaued at 20 millions pounds a year. Our current warehouse lacks the space, innovative design and technologies we need to meet the nutritional needs of our clients and to creatively manage new sources of food, such as nutrient-dense bulk items like beans and rice. We also lack the trucking and refrigeration space to handle the millions of pounds of fresh produce and other highly- perishable items needed each year. In fact, the food bank has had to consistently turn away millions of pounds of food for lack of space. The food bank’s highly regarded education and outreach programs are also at their limits. The facility has no industrial or demonstration kitchen to prepare hot meals to go, for Kids Café sites, for example, or for safe-food-handling or meal-preparation courses. To ensure that we can continue to meet the nutrition needs of the The increased warehouse space will allow the food bank to be more efficient and provide repackaging services for bulk items to benefit our customers, as well as expand educational programs designed to teach people how to maximize their food resources. With your support, the Capital Area Food Bank can seize this opportunity to grow and serve.
This project is made possible in part through the generous support of the DC Department of Housing and Community Development.
